Annual Benefit a Big Success

RODNEY STREET TENNIS & TUTORING ASSOCIATION ANNUAL BENEFIT A BIG SUCCESS

Greenville, DE (May 2010) - On Thursday evening, May 6, 2010 Rodney Street Tennis & Tutoring Association held their annual Benefit at the Greenville Country Club.  Over 200 friends, sponsors, and guests turned out to show their support of the non-profit organization and had the chance to meet Patrick McEnroe, the former top-ranked professional tennis player and now US Davis Cup coach and USTA General Manager for Player Development.

The event achieved record goals this year.  The affair was able to raise $60,000 to support our tennis and education programs.

"We had an amazing turn out with great people wanting to enjoy each other’s company and support Rodney Street," observed Tina Tharp, RSTTA Managing Director. "I am most grateful for the extraordinary leadership of our Benefit Chairs, Sally & Don DeWees, and for the team effort put forth by the entire RSTTA Board of Directors, staff, volunteers, as well as the 215 guests who helped make this night a rousing success.”

Marshall Harris, of Comcast SportsNet, was master of ceremonies for the event. The proceeds of the benefit will support the year-round programming that positively impacts the lives of over 800 young people in the Greater Wilmington region.

RSTTA’s mission is to build lives through tennis and education. It provides year round, after-school and out-of-school programs that are designed to combat pressing community concerns: truancy; poor academic achievement contributing to an alarmingly low graduation rate; gang activity; drug and alcohol dependency; and unhealthy lifestyles.  The RSTTA curriculum supports both the personal development of the “whole” child as well as the communal development of the neighborhoods in which these children live and play.  As an adjunct to its youth enrichment programs, RSTTA provides adult family members of its participants with the opportunity to receive training and tutoring for GED certification and/or college readiness.  RSTTA’s principal sponsor is the Comcast Family of Companies. Additional support comes from foundations, corporate, public and private resources.

Wilmington, DE (June 2009), - On Thursday, June 18, 2009, ten boys and girls from the Rodney Street Tennis & Tutoring Association (RSTTA); a USTA NJTL Chapter providing innovative tennis and educational enrichment programs to inner-city youth, will take part in a Quick Start tennis clinic with tennis legend Billie Jean King.  Activities will take place at the Wachovia Spectrum in Philadelphia.

Billie Jean is there as part of the ongoing farewell celebration of the famed Spectrum, and to promote the upcoming WTT season and her team, the Philadelphia Freedoms.  The Spectrum was former home of the prestigious Philadelphia Indoor Championships.

“This will be a great day for our kids to spend time with Billie Jean,” stated RSTTA Chairman, Jane Brown Grimes.  Grimes is the immediate past President of the USTA.  “We are so grateful to WTT for extending this opportunity to allow our kids to meet a woman who has made such an indelible impact as a positive role model in our society.”

Valero Sponsorship

Valero Energy Foundation sponsors RSTTA

The Valero Energy Foundation raises money annually during their Texas Open Benefit for Children Golf Classic.  The monies raised are for children’s charities in the communities where Valero has major operations.

The beneficiaries are nominated by Valero employees, and an all-employee committee evaluates the charities and makes the final selection by voting on which agencies they believe will provide the most benefits to disadvantaged children.

RSTTA’s advocate, Bob Wheatley - a member of the church, was very persuasive and a check was issued to RSTTA in the amount of $5,000 to be used for programming.
